Using ERGO with SDRuno is easy and fun.
ERGO supports software defined radio. It achieves this by interfacing with leading third party software. Because most SDR software enables a CAT connection, this is easy to do.
SDRPlay is a wonderful little “DC to Daylight” radio available at a great price. Earlier this year, SDRPlay added its own software package called SDRuno. SDRuno is a version of the professional Studio 1. Both SDRuno and Studio 1 are first-rate user interfaces. Both use a sub-set of the Kenwood command protocol to enable interconnection.
The picture here shows using ERGO with SDRuno. With this setup, ERGO treats SDRPlay as just another receiver. The only difference is that instead of connecting to the radio over serial port, ERGO connects with the SDRuno software using a virtual serial port.
In addition to SDRPlay, SDRuno will control any other SDR that supports the EXTIO interface. Great sources of information are the SDRuno manual and cookbook. Finally, here is the download link for the software.
Set Up ERGO with SDRuno
Here are the steps you should follow to use ERGO wtih SDRuno.
- First, install a virtual serial cable (virtual COM) on your computer. If you don’t already have this, there are open source solutions such as com0com that work well. When you set up a virtual cable, you assign two virtual com port numbers, one for each end of the connection.
- Second, connect SDRuno to one end of the virtual cable. This is done through the Settings-CAT window. Select the COM Port number you want to use at the SDRuno end. Set the baud rate to 4800.
- Third, create a new radio in ERGO. Use the Studio 1 driver and select the COM Port number at the other end of the virtual cable.
That’s all there is to it. ERGO now connects to the SDRuno software like it was another radio. When you tune either program, the other follows along. The screenshot shown here is ERGO controlling a Perseus through SDRuno.

The software also enables multiple applications to share the same hardware serial port.
